The UP College of Arts and Letters (CAL)
The UP College of Arts and Letters (CAL) is the nation’s premier center for the rigorous study of the human condition through the lenses of language, literature, cultural and performance studies. Our student body is characterized by a distinctive intellectual stamina—a collective of researchers, linguists, and artists who view the arts and humanities not as a passive field of study, but as a critical infrastructure for understanding a complex, globalized world.
At CAL, the academic environment is defined by an exacting adherence to technical precision and a deep-seated accountability to the historical and contemporary narratives of the Philippines and the broader Global South.
Student life here is marked by a quiet, sustained intensity. It exists in the meticulous transcription of endangered oral traditions, the forensic deconstruction of colonial archives, and the disciplined refinement of creative form within our studios and seminar rooms.
There is an avoidance of the performative. Instead, the CAL student prioritizes the evidence-based critique and the sophisticated synthesis of classical theory with 21st-century geopolitical realities. This produces graduates who possess the analytical depth found in the world’s most elite liberal arts institutions, balanced by a grounded, visceral engagement with the pressing social demands of their time.
