History

DFPL was established in 1966 as a response of the university to the growing need to hone a Filipino-oriented and nationalist studentry. To further broaden the knowledge and understanding of the students in Philippine society and culture, the aims of the department were outlined:

  • develop the national language which is Filipino and the Philippine languages; and

  • create research about the various ethnolinguistic groups to create a national literature and culture.

In order to accomplish the aims of the department, the institution offers various academic programs as well as enhancing publication through peer-reviewed journals, conferences and workshops, and extension services of the department.

Among the roster of the faculty members are well-known writers, researchers, and scholars of language, literature, and culture in the Philippines.
