Master of Arts (Spanish)Mastery of Spanish is attained through comprehensive analysis of the language’s structure and in-depth study of Hispanic literature that includes classic contemporary literature of Spain, Spanish America and the Philippines.
The student shall be required to choose from among three areas of concentration: Language, Literature and Translation. The program consists of twelve units of core courses, 15 units of courses from areas of concentration, six units of another European language or Filipino for non-native speakers and a master’s thesis (six units) for a total of 33 units.

Master of Arts (French Language)The growing interest in the French language as well as in the French Studies triggered by opportunities in the job market urged the Department to institute the only graduate studies program in French in the country today. The program offers the students two areas of specialization: one in language and literature and another in translation.
Applicants shall be admitted after passing an interview and a written test in the target language. Depending on their level of competence in the language, applicants who are non-French majors may likewise be required to complete a minimum of 18 units of advanced undergraduate courses from the areas of concentration, six units of cognate courses, a comprehensive examination and completion of a special project.

Master of Arts (German)This program is designed to enhance the knowledge of the German language and culture of those who wish to pursue a career in teaching and translation. It also aims to provide additional language skill and advanced formal training in German for employees and executives of multinational companies.
Applicants to the program must be a holder of a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent or title from the University of the Philippines or from other recognized institutions of higher learning. They shall be admitted to the program after passing an interview and a written test in the target language. For non-German majors in the undergraduate level, admission to the program shall be considered only upon completion of 18 units of advanced undergraduate courses or the ZDaf (Certificate in German as a Foreign Language) which may be obtained from the Goethe Institut.

Ph.D. (Hispanic Literature)This program aims to sharpen the student’s analytical and critical senses and further refine their research skills through a highly specialized study of the Spanish language and Hispanic literature.
The student shall be required to choose from among three areas of concentration: Spanish-Peninsular Literature, Spanish American Literature, or Spanish-Filipino Literature. The program consists of 36 units of formal coursework and dissertation (12 units). In addition, the student is required to complete nine units of any one European Language other than Spanish which must be taken during the first year in the program.
