Academic Programs

The College of Arts and Letters (CAL), through its various degree programs, hopes to maintain its leadership in the arts and letters in the country. Through its functions of instruction, research, and extension, CAL upholds humanistic ideas amidst technological advancement, promotes Arts and Letters as an instrument of liberation and empowerment, and inculcates values that are meant to serve as the foundation for a nationalistic culture.

CAL students-1Three of the College’s Departments have been recognized as National Centers of Excellence by the Philippine Commission on Higher Education (CHED). These are the Departments of English and Comparative Literature (in English language and literature), European Languages (in foreign languages), and Filipino and Philippine Literature (in Filipino language and literature).

Students may choose from among ten major fields under the Bachelor of Arts program: Philippine Studies, Art Studies, Comparative Literature, Creative Writing, English Studies, European Languages, Filipino, Malikhaing Pagsulat sa Filipino, Speech Communication, and Theatre Arts. Some programs provide further concentrations or specializations.

 

Undergraduate Programs

Department of Art Studies

BA Art Studies: Art History
Offers intensive course work in Western, non-Western and Philippine art history complemented with electives in related disciplines.

BA Art Studies: Interdisciplinary
Provides a broad range of knowledge on the complex relationship between art and other disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

BA Art Studies: Philippine Art
Involves a study of various themes, forms, and levels of historical development in Philippine art.

 

Department of English and Comparative Literature

BA English Studies: Language
Trains students in the theoretical and practical aspects of language use.

BA English Studies: Literature
Focuses on studies in British and American literatures.

BA Creative Writing
Offers various approaches and techniques in the writing of fiction, poetry, essay, and drama.

BA Comparative Literature
Stresses the use of Philippine and Southeast Asian cultures as matrix for comparative studies in literary theory, gender studies, etc. Students may specialize in one of three areas: Philippine literature in English and in English translation, Asian literatures, or European literatures.

 

Department of European Languages

BA European Languages
Develops the students’ communication in one or two European languages (French, German, Italian, Spanish) enhanced with studies of the target language’s literature and civilization. It has various options for major and minor languages, as well as interdisciplinary areas.

BA Malikhaing Pagsulat sa Filipino (See English translation)
Hinahasa ng B.A. Malikhaing Pagsulat ang pagkamalikhain ng bawat mag-aaral upang maipahayag nang husay ang mga gawang-likha gaya ng mga kuwento, sanaysay at tula sa wikang pambansa.

Sa pagpasok sa programa, tanging pinakamahuhusay na guro lamang ang gagabay sa mag-aaral. Kilala ang mga guro-manunulat na ito sa loob at labas ng bansa. Nakuha nila ang paggalang mula sa kanilang colleagues, at patunay nito ang maraming parangal na natanggap nila. Ang estilo ng pagtuturo nila’y nakapagbibigay ng iba’t ibang teknik at kasanayan upang makalikha ng mga sulating karapatdapat na ilathala. Ang kanilang malawak na karanasan sa mga palihan at pagkritik ay nagiging daan upang mas mapaghusay ng guro ang kanilang dating gawa.

Ang mga nagtapos sa kursong ito ay nakapagtatrabaho sa midyal bilang scriptwriters, head writers, news reporter at producer. Maaari rin silang magturo sa mga pamantasang may kurso sa malikhaing pagsulat at Filipino.

May kabuuang 135 yunit ang B.A. Malikhaing Pagsulat na titiyak sa mga mag-aaral na maging malikhaing manunulat sa Filipino.

BA Filipino at Panitikan ng Pilipinas (See English translation)
Ang B.A. Filipino ay isang kursong nakapokus sa wika at panitikan na naglalayong magkaroon ng mga mag-aaral na may malawak na kaalaman sa pag-unlad ng pambansang wika sa konteksto ng multilingual na bansa.

Ang mga mag-aaral na nakapailalim sa nasabing kurso ay magkakaroon ng mas malalim na kaalaman at pag-unawa kung paanong ang wika ay umiinog sa isang komunidad, partikular ang lipunang Pilipino. Nagiging analitikal at rasyonal ang mag-aaral sa pagtalakay sa nakaraan at kasalukuyang estado ng wika at panitikan sa bansa.

Ang mga nagtatapos sa ilalim ng kursong ito ay nagiging kilalang guro sa elementarya at high school. Maaari rin silang magtrabaho sa pamahalaan, mas midya at NGOs.

May kabuuuang 141 yunit ang kurso na hinati sa mga kursong pangwika at pampanitikan pati na rin mga elektib upang mapalawak pang lalo ang kaalaman.

BA Philippine Studies (See English translation)
Gamit ang interdisiplinaryong lapit, ang BA Philippines Studies ay kursong pinag-aaralan at pinag-uusapan ang lipunan at kulturang Pilipino. Maaaring pumili ng anoman sa tatlong disiplina ng departamento ang estudyante: wika, panitikan, o malikhaing pagsulat. Makapipili rin ang mag-aaral ng asignatura sa labas ng departamento, kagaya ng mga sabjek sa ilalim ng College of Arts and Letters or any from the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, College of Mass Communication, College of Community Development and Social Work, College of Fine Arts, College of Music, School of Economics, the Institute of Islamic Studies o iba pan kaugnay na disiplina.

Nakabubuo ng matalas at kritikal na paninindigan ang mga mag-aaral na pumapasok sa kurso. Napag-uugnay ng mag-aaral ang dalawang napiling disiplina para makalikha ng pananaliksik na kanilang kinahihiligan.

Dahil sa interdisiplinaryong lapit, malawak ang maaaring maging trabaho ng mga nakapagtapos ng nasabing kurso. Maaari siyang magtrabaho sa midya, sa mga ahensiya ng pamahalaan, mga NGO, opisina at sa loob ng akademiya. Maganda ring lunsaran ang kursong ito para sa mga mag-aaral na nais kumuha ng Bachelor’s degree sa Law.

 

Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts

A craft-oriented program designed to train prospective actors, directors, designers, and theater managers.

BA Speech Communication
Offers a wide selection of areas in Speech Communication which develops both intellectual and creative abilities to function in various communication situations.

BA Theatre Arts
Encapsulates a worldwide repertoire of knowledge in the different areas of Theatre Arts.

 

 

Graduate Programs

The graduate degree programs of the College promote and uphold the highest standards of excellence, integrity, and academic freedom. Crucial to this is a roster of qualified faculty members who are not only experts in their respective fields, but are also expected to serve as mentors.

Programs are available for both MA and PhD degrees. Graduate students are expected to complete a program of study which involves both course work and the production of a scholarly research which will contribute to the enrichment of their chosen disciplines.

Programs are offered by the various Departments of the College, with the Graduate Studies Office (GSO) acting as Secretariat. The GSO implements the policies, rules, and guidelines of graduate programs as approved by the appropriate bodies. It is headed by a Graduate Studies Coordinator working in consultation with the office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the College.

Department of English and Comparative Literature

MA Comparative Literature
Foregrounds multi-disciplinary approaches to the study of European, Asian, African, Latin-American, and Philippine literatures in English or in English translation.

MA Creative Writing
Promotes the activities of creative writing as explicit curricular challenges to English Studies, situates the practice in concrete settings, both past and present, and encourages practicing and established creative writers to join the English Studies faculty while they strengthen their backgrounds in literature, theory, and criticism.

MA English Studies: Anglo-American Literature
Provides expertise in the area of Anglo-American literature.

MA English Studies: Language

PhD Comparative Literature
Focuses on the literature of Asia and the Third World but does not exclude the study of Western literature.

PhD Creative Writing
Prepares students to pursue careers as both creative writers and academics.

Allows a choice from among four areas of concentration:  Language, Literature, Translation, or Rizal Studies.

PhD Hispanic Literature
Allows a choice from among three areas of specialization: Spanish Filipino Literature, Spanish Peninsular Literature, or Spanish American Literature.

 

Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan ng Pilipinas  

MA Araling Pilipino (Philippine Studies)
Uses an interdisciplinary approach to study Philippine culture. A student may choose a program of study which will involve taking courses from two groups of related disciplines, which can be from the humanities or social sciences.

MA Filipino: Malikhaing Pagsulat
Directed at improving skills and deepening knowledge in writing specific literary forms. The program aims to: 1) respond to the growing need for professional creative writers in Filipino and other regional languages; 2) respond to the demands of educational institutions for formal training in writing in Filipino; and 3) invigorate production of creative works in the national language.

MA Filipino: Pagsasalin
Aims to study the development of translation in different historical periods, create standards for research in translation, investigate translations into Filipino from different languages and expand knowledge on the history and principles of translation.

MA Filipino: Panitikan
Prepares students for teaching and research in Philippine literature.

MA Filipino: Wika
Prepares students for teaching and research in Filipino and other Philippine languages.

PhD Filipino
Proposes two areas of study: Filipino language and Philippine Literature. Specialization in the Filipino language may be in structure, planning or translation. On the other hand, the program in Philippine literature should be able to contribute to the conceptualization of a national literature and its aesthetics.
